H.V. Choo Choo Fondren, Jr.

H.V. “Choo Choo” Fondren, Jr., a retired Morgan City businessman, passed away on October 20, 2011. Mr. Fondren, a descendent of early Morgan City settlers, was born in Patterson but spent his first ten years in Groves, Texas. He graduated from both Morgan City High School and the Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now ULL), where he lettered four years in football. After college, Choo Choo and his new bride, Carolyn, returned to Morgan City where he worked with his father for the next 27 years at Blackie Fondren Concrete. He was involved in many civic activities and held two elected positions—as a member of the St. Mary Parish School Board for 14 years, and then for two terms as a Councilman-at-Large in the newly formed St. Mary Parish Council. Mr. Fondren is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Forcheimer Fondren, daughter Holly Fondren of Houston, TX, sons Clay Fondren of New Orleans, Fredrick Fondren and his wife Katherine, of Broken Arrow, OK, and grandchildren James Baxter Fondren of New Orleans and Sutton and Reigne Fondren of Broken Arrow, OK. Mr. Fondren was preceded in death by his parents, H.V. “Blackie” Fondren, Sr. and Amy Bourgeois Fondren. He will be missed by his family and friends, where he was known for his jovial personality and sincere loyalty. The Fondren family wishes to thank Dr. James Ellis and the attending nursing staff at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center for their heartfelt care. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to your favorite charity in Mr. Fondren’s name. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 9:00 AM on Monday, October 24, 2011at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Private entombment will take place following mass.
