It is with heavy hearts and a spirit of celebration that we announce the passing of Jennings “Jay” Moise Bernard Jr., who lived life to the fullest from August 31, 1958, until September 20, 2025. Born in Morgan City, Louisiana, the son of Jennings Bernard Sr. and Bertha Landry Bernard. Jennings was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Gena, and a cherished friend to many.
Jay was a jack of all trades, a true master of fixing anything that came his way. His passion for mechanical projects was matched only by his delight in playing pranks, always ready to spark laughter among friends and family. He wasn’t just known for his skills; he was also a debater, known for getting under everyone’s skin in the best possible ways.
After a fulfilling career as a diesel mechanic, Jay moved on to become a port captain, where he navigated the waters of both his profession and his friendships. In his later years, he took to the open roads, proudly driving an 18-wheeler across the United States. He loved watching movies; always looking for familiar highways, and saying, “I’ve been there on that highway.” With a brave and strong spirit, Jay faced his illness head-on, never allowing it to overshadow the joy he brought to those around him. He relished life's simple pleasures like shopping on Amazon, and at Harbor Freight. At Halloween, he always eagerly anticipated for Mary’s annual themed parties.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 23 years, Gena Delaune Bernard; four children, Jennings Bernard III, and wife Sarah, Clifford Bernard Sr. and wife Megan, Austin Bernard and wife Katie, and Ashlyn Bernard Darcé; 9 grandchildren, Tyler Bernard and wife Cherie, Maryssa Bernard and fiancé Shon Singleton, Bailey Bernard, Clifford Bernard Jr., William Bernard, Benjamin Bernard, Lillie Dang, Adeline Darcé, Imogene Darcé; four great-grandchildren, Gracelyn Singleton, Braxton Singleton, Hollin Singleton, and Tobias Bernard; one brother, Eric Bernard Sr.; two sisters, Letty Steckler and husband Fritz and Cynthia Sarver and husband Kevin.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents, Jennings Sr. and Bertha Bernard; sister, Nadine Marcel.
As we gather to celebrate Jay’s remarkable life, we invite friends and family to join us for a memorial service on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 2:00 PM., at Twin City Funeral Home, with Father Brett Lapeyrouse officiating. This will be a time to share stories filled with laughter, remembrance, and love. We will honor him with warmth, just as he has always warmed our hearts. Visitation will be held, Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 10:00a.m. until the time of services.
