Obituary

Dr. Lowell Manley Hurwitz

Dr. Lowell Manley Hurwitz, 92, of New Orleans, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 11, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Lowell was born on February 21, 1934, to Robert and Bertha Hurwitz. From an early age, he demonstrated the qualities that would define his entire life — intelligence, determination, humor, generosity, compassion, and an incredible ability to connect with people.

A gifted athlete, Lowell had a lifelong passion for sports. His athletic ability led him to the remarkable achievement of earning a place with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football organization, a testament to his talent, discipline, determination, and competitive spirit. Throughout his life, he continued his love of competition through golf, bowling, and any activity that brought people together.

Lowell went on to dedicate his life to caring for others through medicine. As a respected physician and radiologist, he served as Chief of Radiology at both Methodist Pendleton Memorial Hospital and Chalmette General Hospital. His colleagues knew him not only for his medical expertise and leadership, but also for the compassion, humor, and warmth he brought to everyone around him.

Lowell also proudly served his country as a physician in the United States military during the Vietnam era, caring for others with the same dedication and commitment that guided his entire life.

Of all his accomplishments, Lowell’s greatest joy was the beautiful life and family he built with his beloved wife, Lorraine Hurwitz. Together they created a home filled with love, laughter, generosity, and unforgettable memories. Lorraine was the love of his life and his partner through life’s journey until her passing nearly ten years ago.

Those who knew Lowell best will remember the man behind the accomplishments — the storyteller, the comedian, the competitor, and the friend. He had a gift for making people laugh, a quick wit that could brighten any room, and a personality that made strangers feel like lifelong friends. His generosity knew no limits, whether caring for patients, helping family, or simply being there for someone who needed him.

Above all else, Lowell treasured his family. His greatest legacy was not only what he achieved, but the love, kindness, and values he passed on to those closest to him. He will be forever cherished and remembered by his son, Joshua Hurwitz, and Joshua’s fiancée, Michelle LeBlanc; his grandchildren, Jacob Hurwitz and Jordan Hurwitz; his sister-in-law Cheryl Babin, whom he loved and helped raise as family; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Lowell was reunited in peace with those who passed before him, including his beloved wife, Lorraine Hurwitz; his parents, Robert and Bertha Hurwitz; his son, Ronald Charles Hurwitz; his brothers, Jackie Hurwitz and Elfere “T-Joe” Billiot, and Cheryl’s husband, Jay Babin.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 15, 2026, at Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery, with Rabbi David Gerber officiating.

Following the service, family and friends are warmly invited to gather at the Hurwitz family home, 5200 Marcia Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana 70124, to celebrate Lowell’s life, share memories, and spend time together in his honor.
